The realisation

For a long time, the team behind Again had been frustrated by the common approach to sustainability: greenwashing and doing something, but still as little as possible. How do you change this mindset, and thereby the direction in which we are heading?

The conclusion was that you need to make sustainability the most profitable thing a consumer brand can do. Nothing else had the potential to create impact at the scale that is needed.

Every consumer brand’s dream

With backgrounds from retail and e-commerce, the Again team has deep knowledge of the challenges facing consumer brands. The most profound is true customer understanding.

Johan Lönnberg, CEO, gives an example: ‘If a consumer buys a t-shirt, the retailer knows that a t-shirt has been sold. However, it does not know the customer’s age, how many times he or she has shopped there before, or when the last purchase was made, just to mention a few examples. Truly understanding such aspects is every consumer brand’s dream – they would be able to improve all parts of the business, increase profitability dramatically and make room for increased sustainability investments.’

Using open banking to accelerate the climate transition

Transaction data provides an unparalleled possibility to create this customer understanding, and by partnering with Tink, Again has been able to create a model that leverages this to accelerate the climate transition.

The Again app allows people to share their transaction data anonymously, via Tink, by simply clicking a button. Users can also access a broad variety of educational content around climate change, and thereby increase their knowledge of the issue.

At the other end of the spectrum, Again gives consumer brands access to the anonymized data via a web-based portal. However, access is given upon one condition: That the company commits to calculating and disclosing their climate footprint.

By unlocking immense value for those who do things right from a climate perspective, Again wants to create a new dynamic where consumer brands get a crystal-clear reason to push sustainability to the top of their agenda.

Driving change by regulating access to data

Again describes that access to anonymised transaction data will become vital to consumer brands. And when some gain access to it, soon no brand will be able to compete without it. That way, Again will succeed in what they set out to do: make sustainability the most profitable thing a consumer brand can do.

Again is currently available in Sweden, and will be launched in other European markets soon.

‘Our roll-out plan for Europe made it natural for us to partner with Tink, as no one can match their scope and scale,’ Johan Lönnberg concludes.
